I must disagree with the calling of Japanese cartoons as Shi%-$. The film did not hold to the them or essence of the manga/comic or cartoon/anime. But the movie was definitely a flop. No bearing on the original producys.
Well, to be clear, I’m the only one who dislikes all anime (I just have a clock against the art style and the reduced frame rate, which I feel makes the animation look herky-jerky, even with the top directors like Miazaki). Stuart and Elliott like some anime a lot.
Clearly a bajillion years too late here, but Satoshi Kon movies are amazing. His movies work even if they weren’t anime. Basically he’s the guy Aronofsky ripped off to become an acclaimed director.
